Kvarner
Kvarner or Kvarner bay is a bay in the northeastern Adriatic Sea, between Istria and the Croatian coast. The largest islands in the Kvarner Bay are: island Krk, Cres, Losinj and Rab.
Kvarner area is 3582 km2, which is actually 6.3% of Croatian territory. The population is over 300,000 and only half population is in the city of Rijeka with 144 000 inhabitants.
Kvarner is Croatia region that has developed tourism throughout the year. The coastal area of Kvarner is engaged in tourism during the summer season while the mountain part is working in tourism in the winter. Be sure that if you travel to Kvarner in any time of year, events and other activities will not miss.
The largest islands of the Kvarner Bay, Island Krk and Cres have a developed tourist industry. Kvarner has a mild Mediterranean climate. With more than 217 sunny days in year are the islands Losinj, Cres, Krk and Rab.
Air temperatures in the spring is between 20-25 degrees and in summer see known to have temperature up to 26 degrees.
History of Kvarner
Kvarner due to its favorable location was inhabited during prehistoric times. The first inhabitants of these regions were Liburni and a great impact on the Kvarner had the Greek sailors and Roman.
Great number of historical monuments in Kvarner show a great impact of the Romans who established trade links with todays Europe.
Arrival of the Croats in Dalmatia took place sometime in the 7th century, as evidenced by the most important monument of Croatian language, Baska Tablet. The Baska tablet was created around 1100 years and was found on the island Krk.
Over the years, changed many rulers in the Kvarner region. Great influence in the 13th century has left the Austro-Hungarian Empire, responsible for building summer houses and villas for the wealthy aristocracy. This villas are the beginning of tourism in Kvarner.
City Rijeka between the two world wars, became an autonomous part of Italy, as the Free State of Rijeka.
Completing the second World War, the city Rijeka along with Istria is annexed by Yugoslavia.
Collapse of Yugoslavia in 1990. Rijeka and Istria became part of the Croatian Republic.
