Umag, small town and port on the northwestern coast of Istria, presents' Croatian door in Europe. " Umag is today a city of tourism and sport. It is especially known as a sports center in Istria because is host for years of the ATP tournament, it attracts numerous top world tennis players.
According to the census of 2001. Umag has a total of 13.064 inhabitants.
Only 40 kilometers away from Trieste, 150 from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and 50 nautical miles from Venice, Umag is a favorite place for vacation, with exceptional hiking opportunities.

History about Umag


Today's peninsula was actually once an island, and the village was located at the end of the port of Umag. Walls with gates and drawbridges raised in the X. century. Partially preserved on the southwest side, near the town museum, which was one of the defensive towers.

At the entrance to the historical center of Umag is the Church of St. Rocco, built after the plague epidemic in year 1507th. The interior is the same unique painted wooden ceiling of the XVIII. century.

The parish church of the Assumption and St. Peregrina, the patron saint of Umag, is built from the project of architect Filippo Dongeti from Piran.
  On the inner side of the entrance to the church is built a version of St. Peregrin in stone from XIV. century. On the ceiling of the church is a painting attributed to Giuseppe Barnardin Bison from Palmanova. On the main altar are statues of St. Peregrin and Sv. Nicefora.

In church is a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, which is attributed to one of Vivarinijev students. Venetian lion originally located on a tower was destroyed by fire in 1924th year. The bell tower is 33 meters tall, and originated from the 1651st year.

Behind the parish church, the east wall of the apse, there is a metal ball: thay say it is a cannon ball fired by the Genoese (1810).

On the beach Sv. Peregrine is a church of the same name, built in 1401.th and built on the site where the saint filed a martyrdom death.
