Northern Velebit

Autor croatia traveller Srijeda, 16 Prosinac 2009 10:09

North Velebit National Park was declared 09.06.1999. year. The area was declared a national park because of the pronounced diversity of karst phenomena, the wealth of wildlife and extraordinary natural beauty on a relatively small area.

Area of the park is 109 km2 and is located within the same strict reserve Hajducki and Rozanski hips, which is the specific geomorphologic phenomenon which has so far discovered more than 150 caves, of which most of Luke's cave, one of the deepest in the world in general, discovered in 1999 . year.

Within the park there is a botanical reserve „Visibaba“, where is the biggest place of endemic Croatian sibireja (Sibiraea altaiensis ssp. Croatica), and botanical reserve Zavizan-Balinovac-Velika kosa, which emphasizes the richness of hig mountain flora. Within the reserve there is the famous Velebit Botanical Garden, which was founded by prof. Fran Kusan that dates from 1967th year.

The park is rugged with numerous hiking trails, of which the most known Premuzic trail, named after the builder Ante Premuzic engineer who had designed in 1930th year, while the building itself was finished 1933rd year. The route passes through beautiful and interesting parts of the northern Velebit. With mountain peaks provide a breathtaking view of the Adriatic sea and islands Pag, Rab, Goli, Prvic and Krk, and Lika background of the continental side. Cultural heritage of the park is evident in the numerous ruins of the old livestock apartments, houses and stone walls, which bear witness to past times when this area was settled much larger number of people, which later spread throughout the world, leaving only traces of their presence in this very beautiful and unique space.

The park is inhabited by four species of large predators - brown bear (Ursus arctos), lynx (Lynx lynx), wolf (Canis lupus) and wild cat (Felis sylvestris).
Thirty years ago, the Velebit is again populated with chamois (Rupicapra Rupicapra) and often can be seen on the mountain peaks. From other herbivores, there is also deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), hare (Lepus europaeus), etc.
On Velebit is registered about 180 species of birds, of which about a hundred of them have permanent nest in the area of Velebit Mountain. Symbol of northern Velebit is a big black cock (Tetrao urogallus), our biggest chicken, which in this region is called the "Pivac, and even some of the peaks named after him (Pivcevac). One of the most numerous animal groups on the Velebit are day butterflies (Rhopalocera red). They can be seen everywhere - in forests, meadows, rocks, until now it has registered about 115 species, which certainly is not the final number.

Entrance the National Park Northern Velebit is forbidden for visitors (except passing Premuzic trail) and it can only conduct scientific research and management for educational purposes, with the permission of the competent Authority for the Protection of Nature.
