Basic facts about island Hvar


Hvar is an island in the Split-Dalamtia County. The length of the island is 72 km and the widest part of the island is 10.5 km.
Named after the Greek word Pharos meaning lighthouse.
Climate of the island of Hvar, with respect to geographical location, is significant for its mild winters and dry summers.
Hvar Island has a very developed tourism for young people and it also called Croatian Ibiza.

History about island Hvar


Since Hvar was located in the center of the main maritime routes, history has left numerous traces here, perhaps more than on any other island in the Adriatic. Findings from Grapceva and Markova cave, have enabled archaeologists to identify the so-called Hvar culture (3500 - 2500 pr.ne).

In 1510th - 1514th on Hvar are lasting military conflicts between the nobles and citizens, which will end with the intervention of Venice.

In year 1571 Island Hvar was attacked by the Turks.

In period 1813th-1918th island Hvar is a part of Austria empire. This is a bad period of exceptional economic and cultural life of Hvar, which will revive only in the late 19th century with the development of viticulture.

Between 1921st-1941st The island of Hvar is a part of Yugoslavia. In that is built the city beach which at that time was mentioned as the most beautiful beach in the Adriatic.

In year 1991 the island of Hvar is back in his homeland, free and independent Republic of Croatia.
