Destinations in Croatia - Makarska

The town of Makarska is part of the Makarska Riviera. Makarska Riviera consists of the cities Brela, Baska Voda, Promajna, Bratus, Krvavica, Makarska, Tucepi, Podgora, Drasnice, Igrane, Zivogosce, Drvenik, Zaostrog, Podaca, Brist and Gradac.

Brela is located 15 kilometers northwest of Makarska. In Brela be sure to visit the parish church of Sv. Stephen from the 19th century and Church of Our Lady of Karmen from 18th century.

Baska Voda is located 9 km northwest of Makarska and is very well known tourist resort of Makarska Riviera. Baska Voda is inhabited in ancient times as evidence are traces of settlements of late antiquity and the Byzantine fortress. Be sure to visit late baroque church of St. Lawrence and the parish church of Sv. Nicholas from the 19th century.

Makarska is composed of two parts, the old town core of Mediterranean type and the new part in which are hotels, restaurants, shops ...
In addition to beautiful long beaches, Makarska has many sandy coves.
Be sure to visit the church of Sv. Mark from 17th century in which are valuable sculpture and painting works of art. In front of the church is a baroque fountain from the 18th century.
On St. Peter peninsula is the church of the same name from the 9 century which was renovated after the earthquake in 1962.
In Franciscan Monastery of St.. Mary from the 16 century is located a very rich library, Malacological museum with one of the richest collections of shells in the world and collection of Baroque church art.
On the coast there is a late Baroque church St. Philip Neri and the Municipal Museum.
Near the town of Makarska is Vepric and the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, which is well-known place of pilgrimage.
At the foot of Biokovo are villages Veliko Brdo, Puharici, Makar and Kotisina containing Biokovo botanical garden.

Tucepi is located 4 km southeast of Makarska.
At the cemetery are found fragments of furniture from an early Christian church from the 5th century, and several tombstones. Be sure to visit the Romanesque-Gothic church of  St. George from the 13th century. With the church is a Roman tombstone.

Podgora is situated 7 km southeast of Makarska. Podogora is attractive for its natural beauty, beautiful sandy beaches and plenty of greenery.
On the medieval site Sutikla is the church of Sv. Flowed. The church has a cemetery where are medieval tombstones.

Igrane are located 17 kilometers southeast of Makarska. Igrane is a small fishing and tourist village in which we recommend to visit the Baroque parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Zalina tower.
Igrane abounds in historical monuments and preserved the "Chronicle of the Priest Dukljanin“, a very important document in Croatian history.
In the olive groves above the village is a medieval monument church of St. Michael from the 11th century.
On the coast there is a Simic family mansion built in 1760th year.


Zivogosce is a small village 20 km southeast of Makarska. Situated on the slopes of Biokovo and bordered with beautiful sandy beaches.
On a cliff Pokrivenice there is an inscription from ancient times made by Licinianus, leader of the Roman Empire, which was passed this way for the conclusion of peace with the Goths.
On the eastern side there is a Franciscan monastery from the 18th century in which there is a rich library and archives.

Zaostrog lies 33 km southeast of Makarska. On the coast there is a monastery of Sv. Mary, in which there are many objects of artistic crafts. In church is a wooden choir, organ and grave bust of the poet Andrew Kacic Miosic and John Despot. The monastery has a rich library, archives and ethnographic collection.

Drvenik is located 24 kilometers southeast of Makarska and is familiar place because the ferry to the Sucuraj on island Hvar.
Drvenik fort is one of the most important monument built in the 17th century.

Podaca lies 35 km southeast of Makarska. From Podaca is overlooking to the islands of Hvar and Korcula.
In the middle of the cemetery is the church of Sv. John from the 12th century, preserved monument of early medieval architecture in the Makarska Riviera.

Gradac is situated 40 km southeast of Makarska and is known for its long pebble beach. In Gradac be sure to visit the sacred buildings parish church of St. Michael from 19th century and the church St. Ante from18th century.
