Basic facts about National par Krka


The park is named after the river Krka, which is part of the park. National Park is located in central Dalmatia downstream from Miljevci, and only a few kilometers northeast of city Sibenik.
Krka became National Park in 1985. year and the seventh in a row a national park in Croatia. National park Krka is known for its large number of lakes and waterfalls.

Hydropower Jaruga under Skradinski falls is the second oldest hydropower plant in the world and first in Europe. Built in the 28th August 1895th, just three days after the world's first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls.

Cultural and Historical heritage


In the area of national park there are many cultural and historical monuments. These are the archaeological sites, monuments and religious heritage monuments of industrial architecture.
Archaeological sites are from the prehistoric period until the Middle Ages. The most famous sites are the old town Puljani, Ozidana cave and the Roman military camp Burnum which has an old amphitheater.

Along the river Krka are the remains of the 14th century Croatian fortress: Kamicka, Trosenja, Necvena, Bogocina and Kljucice; by dimensions one of the most important defense fortress in Croatia.

In National park Krka are preserved thirty mills from 14th and 15th century. They testify old traditional life. In these mills once milled grain from Dalmatia and Istria.

Franciscans have on Visovac Island, situated in the middle of the lake Visovacko, built the monastery of the Mother of Mercy and Church Our Lady Visovacke.
On the other side of river Krka is located monastery of St. Arhandel, which is the center of the Orthodox Dalmatian eparchies.

In the center of the Krka National Park are the remains of Hydroelectric plane built in year 1895.
